Portrait of a Widow

Project Description

A 17th century Portrait of a Widow, in oil on panel, by unknown artist, early 1600s.

Treatment of this painting involved cleaning and restoration, reduction of panel distortions, adding a non-invasive environmental buffering within the framing, and giving on site advice to the owner about a customised climatic control system. Infra-red photography and X-radiography were carried out to investigate the relationships between original paintwork and later historic re-working of the painting, in order to aid treatment decisions.
