INTERNATIONAL FINE ART CONSERVATION STUDIOS

George Frederick Watts

Project Description

A large canvas painting of King Alfred Inciting the Saxons to Prevent the Landing of the Danes’, 343 x 581 cm, by George Frederick Watts, 1846-7.

Conservation treatment involved removal of the canvas from the wall and transportation to the studios, consolidation of flaking paint, cleaning, re-lining, restoration, re-installation at the Palace following refurbishment works, and a full technical study of this important work and the artist’s somewhat unusual methods at this time. A research paper on the artist’s technique was presented at ICOM 16th Triennial Conference in Lisbon, 2011
